Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

It has been at least 4 years since I have done something drastic to my hair. For a good 10 years I would always grow my hair long and then hack it all off. But for some reason, for the last 4 years, I've maintained long locks and never thought about cutting it off, until now.

On Tuesday night, it was a scene straight out of Felicity - Season 2 episode 1, well not THAT drastic, but somewhat drastic. I headed over to Soon Beauty Lab in Carrol Gardens where my friend Christian (the ultimate hair stylist) did the honors.

After weeks of discussing the cut/length/styling options we decided to go with the fabulous "Shoulder Shag" - or as Christian describes it, "Styled straight with lots of texture." I love it!! It is easy to style and so much easier to maintain in the morning. What do you think?

San Cisco

San Cisco, a 4 piece indie band (fresh out of high school), hail all the way from Fremantle, Australia. Although they are only teenagers. this is a band that is a force to be reckoned with in 2013. They just signed to Fat Possum in the States and Columbia in the UK and are touring with the Vaccines this year. Be sure to check them out at Terminal 5 this Thursday, January 31st.

Their label describes them as "rough, low-fi garage pop, mixed with bright catchy hooks." I think they sound like a mixture of Dirty Gold and Vampire Weekend. Check out my two favorite songs off their Awkward, EP. What do you think?

Top Swimwear Brands of 2013

The weather this week was absolutely freezing. It's been years since I have experienced temperatures this low and reminds me of those cold nights up at Syracuse. What better way to get me out of this frostbite funk than to search for new swimwear. I'm looking to plan a weekend getaway with some friends to escape the cold and wanted to share my top three designers I've been eyeing this swim season. Check it out below.

1. ZINKE SWIMWEAR
Zinke's 2013 Resort Collection is inspired by the carefree elegance of the 1970s. Bustier tops, hipster bottoms, string bikinis, and one pieces can be worn as sets or mixed and matched for the ultimate beach look. The color palette shines with vibrant corals, ocean blues, lobster reds, and pretty lilacs. I'm kind of obsessed with every silhouette. Excited to purchase a few different tops and bottoms to maximize on Zinke's awesomeness. Which silhouette is your favorite?

2. GIEJO SWIMWEAR
Giejo is another contender in the ultimate mix and match beach look. What is great about this line is that  the silhouettes are made from vintage, recycled fabrics which create a unique retro vibe. I love that the prints are so versatile and can really be paired with anything and everything. The one piece and the bandeau top/high waisted hipster bottoms are my favorite silhouettes.

3. ASOS SWIMWEAR
Asos is an amazing online retailer full of fresh, unique, fast fashion products at affordable prices. Even their variety of swimwear does not disappoint, especially for any girl on a budget. For the past few years, my go-to swimsuit has been a one piece style and I can't help but gawk over all of these adorable pieces. Your wallet will also be pleased because there is not one silhouette pictured above that is more than $62. How can you say no to that?

2013 Happiness

I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles

 - Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn had it all right - "happy girls are the prettiest girls". With the month of January almost coming to a close (seriously - how is it almost February?), I decided to reflect upon what has brought me happiness in these last three weeks. Even though the weather has been so depressing and absolutely freezing, you can never have too much happy. It's the little things that continue to make me smile each day and I wanted to share them all with you. What makes you happy in 2013?

New Apartment

Decorating my new apartment has been an absolute blast. I can't wait to show you all what I have done with my little gem of a studio. In the interim, like me on instagram and check out all the fun photos I have been posting. I've tried to purchase fresh flowers every Sunday to help bring delight and wonderful scents every time I walk in the door.

My New Commute

I pride myself on having amazing subway karma, but this new commute might be better than catching the train right when it arrives at the station. My new commute is a straight shot all the way to Penn Station and clocking in at just 15 mins door to door. How can you beat that? I also get to enjoy a few more zzzz's in the morning than I was used to before. Who doesn't love that?

Embracing Cooking

I've got a brand new refurbished kitchen in my apartment that I told myself would not go to waste in 2013. When I lived on the Upper East Side my fridge consisted of bottles of water and Salmon Burgers in the freezer. Cooking was a foreign word to me. Those days are long over. I live so close to the most amazing markets on the Upper West Side (Fairway, Zabaar's, Trader Joe's, etc.) that I've been cooking dinner a couple of nights a week and really loving it. My George Forman grill and I have become besties. Check out the dinner I made the other night inclusive of baked brussel sprouts, salmon and cous cous. Yum!!

Training for NYC Half Marathon

It has been so fantastic having Central Park just a block away from my new digs. How did I ever leave you? This has made training for the NYC Half this March such a treat. Surprisingly, the freezing weather has not made running too difficult and besides, I'd rather run with frostbite than the summer heat. There is also a ton of eye candy in the park to help motivate and push me to run that extra mile.

Royal Teeth

I recently stumbled across this amazing, quirky indie band from Lafayette, Louisiana named "Royal Teeth". At six members strong, this energy-filled group is sure to make you tap your feet. Their LP "Act Naturally" has been on constant repeat on my running playlist in the past few weeks. There bio on Facebook claims that they "make music for adventures" - how awesome does that sound. Their sound is fresh and inviting. Every song has some sort of combination of the following: upbeat rhythms, catchy lyrics, synthesizers and plenty of percussion, both electronic and acoustic. Check out my favorite song "Wild" and let me know what you think? Are you tapping your feet yet?

Emerald City

Top Row (from left): Reiss Boyfriend Cardigan // McQueen Velvet Loafers // Equipment Signature Blouse // Stella McCartney Silk Satin Top
Middle Row (from left): See by Chloe Short Dress // Valentino Wide Leg Short // Michael Kors Ostrich Clutch // Alcozer and J Frog Ring // Yves Saint Laurent Vintage A Line Skirt
Bottom Row (from left): Zirconia Studd Earrings // Essie Pretty Edge Nail Polish // Fire and Ice Crab Pendant

Let's give it up to Pantone's color of 2013 - Emerald. All the other colors must be 'green with envy' as Emerald makes its big debut this Spring fashion season. According to the Color-Wheel-Pro the color green symbolizes the following:

  • Growth
  • Harmony
  • Freshness
  • Fertility
  • Stability
  • Hope
  • Safety
Based on my Motto for 2013 I need some serious Emerald in my wardrobe in the New Year. I am loving all of these wonderful hues and styles above. Between the boyfriend cardigan from Reiss or the amazing frog ring from Zirconia both pieces would be amazing updated silhouettes and trinkets to my closet. Which style is your favorite?

Schoolgirl Charm

Clothing/Shoe designer Rachel Antonoff's (sister to the infamous Jack Antonoff of the band "Fun.") Spring 2013 Collection for Bass Shoes is absolutely adorable. I want EVERY pair (I'm a size 8 btw). This is her third seasonal collab with the comfortable/stylish shoe brand and she does not disappoint.  The big trends that are showcased range from colorblocking, to suede, to bright with hints of pale colors, and even transparency.  Each style is bigger and better than what she has designed in the past. My "masculine chic" style can't wait to snag a few pairs from this bad ass collection. My favorite is a toss up between the jelly platform clog and the charming yellow pennyloafers. Which style is your favorite?

Saint Lou Lou

My friend Maciej's got some great taste in music. The other day he introduced me to this band called "Saint Lou Lou." Hailing all the way from Sweden, but raised in Australia these international twin beauties are the next biggest buzz band to hit the internet. Their debut single "Maybe It's You" sounds like a mashup of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" and College's "A Real Hero". Either way this 80s melancholy pop has me tapping my feet. Check it out below. What do you think?

Best Brunch Spot on the Upper West Side

Cafe Lalo is an adorable brunch spot on the Upper West Side. I can't remember how I stumbled across this little gem of a restaurant but I've been going to brunch here ever since I moved to the city six years ago. It has the ambiance of a European cafe and is most well known for it's cameo appearance in one of Tom Hank's finest films, "You've Got Mail" ;).

Mel and I are headed to brunch here tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited. Between their selection of omelette's (my favorite: goat cheese with spinach & fresh mixed herbs),  giant/endless refills of delicious decaf coffee with a bite sized piece of chocolate on the saucer, and a delicious chocolate peanut butter tart post meal, how could not you resist this place. It also helps that it is within a 2 block radius from my new digs. Hopefully the weather holds up and doesn't rain. When the weather is nice, I love to sit next to the window and look out over the brownstone lined block and gaze at the tree's covered in white Christmas lights.

If you have been, what is your favorite thing to order on the menu? If you haven't been, I highly recommend checking it out, you will not be disappointed.

Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis: Marc Jacobs

I cannot contain my excitement for tonight's post work activity - Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis: Marc Jacobs at the 92nd Street Y.  In 2012, Bibi and I were able to snag tickets to the same series and spend the evening with the jaw-dropping, dreamy fashion icon, Tom Ford. Fern Mallis is one hell-of-a mediator. She asked some of the most intriguing questions to Mr. Ford and I'm sure she will not disappoint this evening.

Marc Jacobs has been wooing my heart for over 15 years. Each season he continues to reinvent himself and change the dynamics of fashion one silhouette at a time. I can't wait to listen about his amazing career and hear about his life ambitions/aspirations.  I'll be live tweeting from the event, be sure to tune in twitter.com/pewterandpuddle.

After Marc Jacobs, Sunhi and I are going to see Vera Wang on Feburary 19th. So many fashion icons to look forward to in 2013. Who is your favorite fashion icon?

Oh Land

I've recently watched a marathon of the hit HBO series "Girls" in preparation for the season 2 premiere this weekend. One of my favorite episodes of last season was titled "Welcome to Brooklyn aka the Crackcident". The episode is full of laughs and ends with the most amazing song "White Nights" from a band called Oh Land (a danish singer-songwriter who currently resides in Brooklyn, New York). This song makes me smile with it's synthpop beats and dreamy chorus. Check it out - what do you think?

1990s Throwback

Top Row: Boy. by Band of Outsiders // Vintage Norma Kamali // Phillip Lim 3.1
Bottom Row (from left): Top Shop // River Island // Top Shop // River Island // Paul & Joe

The last time I rocked a pair of overalls was probably during the 8th grade at Talbert Middle School. The 90s throwback trend keeps evolving and overalls is its next victim of prey. I should have never thrown away my infamous Gap Kids overalls because everything always comes back in style. My first 2013 shopping purchase is going to be a pair of these bad boys - the real question is long, short, or in dress form? I love the Phillip Lim 3.1 leather version, they're only $1400 ;) (I've got expensive taste). Which style above is your favorite?

Watch out Baryshnikov

Baryshnikov better watch out - the year 2013 is already into full swing and I've got my dancing shoes on and ready to go. I may have hung up my pointe shoes at a very early age (14), but I always knew that some day I would pick it back up. Over the weekend, my friend Sunhi and I discussed taking a dance class in the new year and I got really excited about picking up ballet again.

Blocks away from my new apartment is a dance studio called Steps on Broadway. Steps offers a wide variety of classes, 7 days a week, for all different levels of dancers.  You can purchase single class tickets, 5 class and/or 10 class packages. I can't wait to sign up and adorn my infamous leotard and tights again. See you out on the dance floor.
