Cinco de Fashion

Cinco de Fashion

Whether you are celebrating Cinco de Cuatro or Cinco de Mayo, the holidays are vastly approaching. No maracas? No problemo. I searched the interwebs for the most festive apparel to celebrate the holiday in style. Embrace the festivities with a vibrant palette of Mexican-inspired embroidery frocks and then pair it with bold prints or patterned accessories. I will be on the look out for a spicy jalapeƱo margarita at a local bar with friends. However, if you are headed to a full-blown fiesta, check out my favorite selection of pieces above that will serve you well into Summer.

Vacationer

Forget the singer-song writers and more slow paced jams for a minute and feast your ears upon some up-beat Indie tunes from Philadelphia-based band, Vacationer. With similarities similar to Vampire Weekend and Morning Benders, their music echoes the sounds of beach holidays and summer flings. They are currently on tour with Hellogoodbye until their album drops on June 24th. Take a listen of their newest single below. I've got a feeling it is going to be on your Summer Beach playlist too.

NYC Broadway Guide

It's always nice when Karen and Steve come to town (the parental units) because we always try to see some sort of theater. I try to get to theater in between their visits, but usually limit my experiences because Broadway shows aren't cheap.

There is so much good theater happening this Spring that it is time to get creative with your bank account. Last week, I was fortunate to see two new musicals, If/Then and Bullets Over Broadway. Both were fantastic and I highly recommend. It is hard to pick a favorite, but the highlight goes to Bullets Over Broadway, because Karen and I watched it from the front row at $37 each!!! Now I am sure you are wondering, how the hell does one sit front row and spend less than $40 bucks?

Ladies and Gentlemen, brace yourselves. Websites likes Playbill and Broadway For Broke People give you an insider's knowledge on how to make tickets more affordable to students and other theatergoers on a budget. Many Broadway shows (musicals and straight plays) have implemented rush, lottery, and standing-room-only policies. If you are willing to wake up just a couple hours early and wait in line before the box office opens, you too can spend less than $40 bucks and have your broadway dreams come true.

Take a look at some of the show's that I've got my eye on this Spring season and how you get the best experience without even breaking the bank.

The Birkenstock Brigade

Birkenstock

Row 1:  1 // 2 // 3
Row 2:  1 // 2 // 3
Row 3:  1 // 2 // 3
Row 4:  1 // 2 // 3

Whether you love or loathe the orthopedic foot-bed sandal, or your either 8 or 80 years old - there is no denying that Birkenstock has become the mascot for all that is sensible yet stylish this Spring season. The Olsens (the ultimate style icons) were spotted wearing these bad boys last year and I couldn't wrap my head around purchasing the fad from the 90s. Slowly but surely, more and more celebs and designers started embracing the trend - and you know what, they started to grow on me. GUILTY! I now want a pair. Forget any frumpy connotations that you might have associated with Birkenstocks, they're back, they're big, and they're ridiculously comfortable. For now, check those socks at the door with these shoes and invest in an adorable new color or pattern to spruce up that new wardrobe.

HAERTS

Their sound is mystical, ranging with hints of warm electro-pop. Their debut EP, Hemiplegia bares resemblance to the Cars, Sinead, and Fleetwood Mac. The band is a quartet hailing from all over the world - Brooklyn, Germany, and England. These unique individuals are making music that they really believe in and want everyone to relate and hear it. According to their website, "the sound that they've built is a reinforcement of the idea that we all feel joy and despair in equal measure and can find something good in sharing it." Amen! Take a listen to their sweet melodies below on songs Wings and Call My Name. Then, kick your feet up and relax, looks like Spring has finally sprung!

April Showers.....

You know what they say, April Showers bring May Flowers.....As NYC finally embraces warmer climates in the next coming weeks, it is inevitable that your weatherman may forecast a few showers along the way as we begin to prep for flower season.

As I mentioned LY in my Spring Essentials post, a classic Trench Coat is a must have item for the season. Sport it on your morning commute to help with the brisker climates on the way to the office. Plus, who doesn't want to look uber chic when they're suddenly caught in a torrential downpour? I know I do. Check out my favorites below, which one are you eyeing?

Janelle MonƔe

When I first was introduced to Janelle MonĆ”e, it was when she penned her vocal chops on Fun's "We Are Young" anthem. Pepsi's latest ad campaign for the World Cup, has tapped the grandeur song paired with MonĆ”e's pop goodness. The cover of David Bowie's classic anthem is jammed packed with big synths and drums. Take a listen below. Will you be adding the classic rock song to your list of favorite anthems this Spring?

The Mighty Bulldog

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7 // 8 // 9

For those of you that know me, you know that obsessed is an understatement when it comes to English bulldogs. Last year, I wasn't quite ready to jump on the apartment dog bandwagon and therefore, I picked up this little gem (named him Animal ) to tide me over until I was fully ready for that massive commitment. It seems that everywhere I look these days, my favorite pup is popping up on clothing, decor, and even shoes. So before I'm ready to share 5B with a another critter, I'll be eyeing these gems. Are bulldogs your favorite too? What is your favorite dog?

Wardrobe Provided by: Mad Men

I am super excited for the season 7 return of Mad Men this Sunday at 10/9c on AMC.  Although I will be sad once the series finally ends this year, I cannot wait to see how the story lines unfold and where all the characters will end up. Last week, AMC posted character photos to get the devoted fans ready for the premiere. If you are like me and looking for ways to keep yourself occupied until then, I thought I'd play a little game and round up all of the character's fashion and try to decide which one I embody most. I think I've got the personality and ambition of Peggy yet the fashionista savvy characteristics of Megan. Which female character do you embody? Are you more of a sex pistol Joan or a modern 1960s housewife Betty? Take a look below and decide.

Beck

As I mentioned earlier, the Girls soundtrack this year really cranked it up a notch. First we heard this delightful tune from the infamous and adorable Jenny Lewis. And now Beck's got a jam too. Thank goodness, because it has been ages and we all have been anticipating new tunes to his long awaited follow-up from 2008's Modern Guilt. His new single "Blue Moon" makes me want to get into my car and drive down PCH with the windows open (ugh I wish) or better yet, take my bike out along the Hudson when the weather gets warmer. Hurry up Spring, for now this one's on repeat on my commute to the office. What do you think?

Doesn't Matter If You're Black or White

Black or White

Hey Patternistas, 2014 has a fresh crop of graphic prints just for you! The days of fuchsia chevrons and muddy ikats are long gone. Replaced instead by designs that aren't less impactful, but of noticeably more minimal nature - the classic black and white palette. When these pieces are paired all together, it can be a bit too much to the eye. However, as individual pieces they present bold, beautiful statements in the home. I'm not only embracing this trend in my day to day apparel, but I may snag one of these fantastic pieces for my apartment. Which bold accent is your jam?

The LBD

There are a few staple pieces that every women should have in her wardrobe. One of those pieces is the little black dress or as most people like to refer to it, The LBD. What's great about this silhouette is that it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. What's great about the LBD is it can come in a variety of flattering lengths and silhouettes. Since wedding season is vastly approaching (I've got my fair share this year), I thought I'd round up 9 LBD's that were catching my eye. I've got my eye on this one by AQ/AQ, what about you?
