Dare to Decorate: Studio Proba

For this month's Dare to Decorate installment, I bring you, the ever so talented Alex Proba of Studio Proba. Back in 2014, Proba came home from her day job and sat down for 30 minutes at night and created a poster graphic on her computer. With each poster she either manipulated found images or from shapes and/or patterns that she created on her own. I believe that "A Poster A Day" is the kind of experiment that every creative person should dabble in at some point in their life. Making a poster became the last thing she did before she headed to bed - like the routine of brushing one's teeth. At the end, the finish product was a visual diary - a narrative each day through a poster.

She has since graduated from this project and now focuses her attention on a plethora of other products, graphics, environmental furniture design and artwork. I've been recently stalking her Instagram and am pretty much obsessed with everything she creates. Even though "A Poster A Day" is no more, you can still purchase these prints on her website. I think these prints would be so adorable in one's kitchen or bathroom. Check out my favorites below, do you agree?

Private Party Swimwear

I can't believe we are 10 days away from Memorial Day, which means Summer is officially almost here. The warmest season is just around the corner. It's time to start preparing for pool parties, trips to the beach, and weekend adventures to the Hamptons/Fire Island. With that said, is your swimsuit game on point yet?

If not, do I have a treat for you. The folks over at Private Party are making quite the splash with their viral swimwear.  Each style is just $99, and come in a handful of colors and fun sayings. There are over 77 different kinds to choose from. I picked out my top 9 favorite below. I hate to admit it, but I want them all. Which one are you eyeing?

Hamilton the Musical

Last Wednesday night, I left my apartment for the first time in two weeks and saw Hamilton. Thanks to the amazing Melanie Heyman and Alex Lacamoire, we were fortunate to snag seats to the hottest show in town and it blew all of my expectations out of the water (and then some). I am still in complete awe of the spectacle I saw. I wanted the musical to just be "ok" since there was soooo much hype. However, I was proved very wrong, it completely deserves every single award it's won and all 16 (record-breaking) Tony nominations.

What makes it so captivating, is because it is a modern musical based on history and set to rap music. Where else can you see Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton having a rap battle on the stage? That's right, no where. Since seeing the musical, the entire two-disc cast recording has been on repeat in my apartment. I thought I'd share my favorite numbers below and inspire everyone to grab the album immediately. Enjoy!

Velcro Visions

Each Summer, there is a popular shoe style that emerges. In 2015, it was all about espadrilles and the year before that, it was Birkenstocks. In 2016, it's all about the velcro sneaker. The footwear once reserved for toddlers, is now making an appearance on both men and women alike. While the styles do maintain a childish quality, the latest designers give the sneaker a sleek, eye-catching appeal. The shoes can be best worn with a polished outfit. Take the casual kicks and pair it with a tailored trouser, crisp pair of jeans, or a printed sundress. Just steer clear or primary colors, no one wants to be mistaken as a kindergartener at the office.

Here are 7 designs that you will want to get your hands for your weekends out of town or around the city. Enjoy!

1. Velcro Stan Smith Snakeskin Sneakers, Adidas $90

2. All Star Velcro Low Tops, Converse $80

3. Palse Sneaker, Aldo $85

4. Triple White/Black, Acne $500

5. Divine Sneaker, Calvin Klein $119

6. Glitter Velcro Strap Hi-Top Sneakers, MM6 Maison Margiela $390

7. Snake Embossed Velcro Sneaker, Anna Kastle $39.90

Birds With Fleas

While their name may not be the most satisfying, their sound most certainly is. Currently based out of NYC, this indie/pop band is one to keep your eyes and ears open for in these next few months. The helm of the band consist of childhood choir friends, Matt Siegel and Spencer Karges. How adorable is that? If you dig favorites like Bon Iver, Local Natives, and Band of Horses, then this is the band for you. Hopefully these rainy days are behind us, but if not, be sure to give these guys a spin below and curl up with a good book. You won't be disappointed, I promise.

The First Monday in May

Some of my favorite documentaries to watch are fashion documentaries. What captivates me the most about these films, is that it gives the viewer an insider's peak into the beauty of the industry. In recent years, I loved both Scatter My Ashes and IRIS and now there is a new feature that is sure to mesmerize all the fashionistas out there. Fresh off the cusp of Monday's Met Gala, The First Monday in May is the movie to see this Summer.

According to André Leon Talley, "The Met Ball is the Superbowl of fashion events." AMEN!!
The film follows the creation of the Met's most attended fashion exhibition in history, "China: Through The Looking Glass," curated by Andrew Bolton. Filmmaker Andrew Rossi, gives us a behind the scenes look of the collision of high fashion and celebrity at the Met Gala. The cast features fashion powerhouses - Lagerfeld, Gaultier, and John Galliano (to name a few). The most interesting part about the film, is the ultimate debate about whether fashion should be viewed as art or not.

As soon as these crutches are off, I am jetting to the Paris Theater to see this film. Take a peak at the trailer below and join me for this epic film this Summer.

Amy Grant x Tori Kelly

Does anybody remember the infamous single from Amy Grant, "Baby Baby?" I'm pretty sure I owned the cassette of her album and it was on constant rotation during my childhood on my sister's pink boombox. If you do remember, do I have a treat for you! It's been 25 years since your favorite 90s jam hit the radio waves and this epic song is back and better than ever. In honor of its quarter century birthday, Grant has released a new version of the tune featuring the luscious vocals of Tori Kelly. Take a listen below and it will bring all the nostalgia rushing right back to you from your youth.

I think it's time I put together a 90s playlist and this song will definitely be on it.
